Built-in furniture
A full-wall library for a Mokotów living room, built around an off-centre window and radiator, with shelving sized for the weight of the books.
The brief
In a Mokotów living room, the client wanted to fit several thousand books onto a wall that isn't uniform: an off-centre window with a radiator underneath it. Standard modular shelving wouldn't fit that layout without large gaps beside the window, and the client worried that ordinary board shelves would sag over a few years under that many books. He also wanted a closed section at the bottom for things that don't need to be on show.
Our approach
We designed a unit running the full width of the wall, wrapping around three sides of the window and hiding the radiator behind a milled, perforated panel that doesn't block the heat. Support spacing and shelf thickness were set for the weight of hardback books, so the middle of each span won't sag even after years of use. The lower section, closed cabinets with veneer fronts, holds files and equipment that don't need to be on display; the upper section stays open for books and keepsakes. Shelf edges and uprights are solid wood, to stand up to heavy volumes being pulled out and put back often, and LED lighting hidden in a few shelves lights up the spines rather than the whole wall at once. Design, production and fitting took eight weeks.
